According to a November report by the BBC, there is a notable 25% increase in people accessing the web from mobile phones. This compares to a mere 3% growth in internet access from desktops. The report predicts that this new wave of mobile access to the web will increase even more in 2009.
This could be a new opportunity for market research surveys. Like so many of my friends and colleagues, I am increasingly accessing the web via my cell phone. Yes, the small keys take a bit more effort to use, but that minor hassle is overcome by the fact that I can be productive while I’m waiting for a plane or standing in line at Starbucks.
Most significantly, this increase means that your customers will start using mobiles to take part in online surveys. Time at a desktop can be prioritized for sending emails or paying bills, and time travelling dedicated to completing online surveys. More people will realize that it’s easy to take a survey while you wait at a station or travel in a train. It’s a great investment in time management - your customers gain reward points for completing a survey while just ‘waiting around’ or away from their desk.
This is an exciting opportunity for research companies to target campaigns at mobile phone users with a view to increase survey taking while customers are on the move.
